LOOK THERE: Onota Lake DRINK THIS: Morning Coffee There is something quiet and peaceful about coming back repeatedly to this view, waking up on Onota Lake and having a cup of morning coffee. Pittsfield, MA, a town in the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts is nicknamed "the Heart of the Berkshires" the largest city and center of the Berkshires. The Berkshires, which is part of the Appalachian Mountains, is known for its natural beauty, fall foliage, outdoor activities and culture. Pittsfield is home to one of the oldest July 4th parades, dating back to the early 1800s as well as some would say the birthplace of baseball. A document discovered in Pittsfield stated that the sport of baseball was played in 1791 in Pittsfield, MA. The famous Wahconah Park built in 1919 is one of the last ballparks in the United States with wooden seats. Onota Lake meaning "the place where fishermen live" is the largest lake in the Berkshires. It was home to Camp Onota where legendary composer and music conductor Leonard Bernstein worked as a music counselor for the camp in the 1930s.
